What are some strategies you have discovered that have improved your life?

Reddit asks the question.  Here are some of the answers:

  • Staying calm in any altercation with another person will result in your looking better, and the other person looking foolish.
  • Do my exercise routine in the morning, helps to jump start my day and stay energetic.
  • Resolve every night that there is nothing you can do about your life’s problems while you sleep and that the next morning you will do your best; get some much needed rest.
  • Write down good ideas.
  • Set your alarm to go off about a half hour before you want to get up. Quickly drink a caffeinated beverage (coffee, red bull, morning spark, ext) when the alarm goes off. Turn off the alarm and go back to bed. In a half hour you will wake up refreshed and feeling great.
  • Ride the bus, save tons of money. Not because of gas but because going to the store becomes a royal pain in the ass.
  • if you want to make a change in your life you will need to force your self to do it for 1-3 months (on average) before it just become natural [this bit of knowledge seem to help a lot with setting realist goals, and staying on track]
  • when cleaning, look at an item and ask, have i used this this month? if no, throw it away, unless its extremely valuable! and i mean extremely … like you’d hate your self for the rest of your life for losing it valuable. less stuff = less time cleaning = more free time. plus things stay cleaner when there is less stuff to around.
  • Run barefoot, your arches and ankles will thank you. And I mean all the time.
  • Cook your own food. Better tasting. Fantastic skillset. Cheaper.
  • Motivation follows action, not the other way around. Get up and do it, then you will feel like doing it. If you wait until you feel like it, you probably wont do it.
  • Control your thoughts!!! As a man thinks, so shall he become.
  • Don’t cook bacon naked.
  • An average looking person who smiles a lot is more attractive to 80-90% of th population. Worldwide. So show some teeth! It goes a long way.
  • Lastly, one of the best way to start to help with depression is to force yourself to be cheerier. Even if you’re faking it. After some time (a few weeks) you WILL notice a change in your demeanor. But you also have to legitimately try.

What are some strategies you have discovered that have improved your life?

Boomer Parents Still Supporting College Graduate Children

Gen Y Many 2009 college graduates are still searching for work long after they stored their caps and gowns in their boomer parents' attics.  Now, as the Class of 2010 prepares to follow them into workforce, the job market continues to deteriorate.

A deteriorating job market for new college graduates caused widespread dissatisfaction among students this year.  Schools that succeeded in finding jobs for grads rose to the top of the ranking.

Helicopter parents Anxiety about jobs, and students' dissatisfaction with the help they are getting from school placement offices, are reflected in Bloomberg BusinessWeek's fith annual ranking of undergraduate business programs.  Only 38% of college seniors majoring in business who responded to the BusinessWeek survey in January reported having a job offer in hand.  That compares with 46% in 2009 and 56% in 2008.  Of the 27,317 student respondents, 58% voiced concern about their job searches and 38% reported they are considering alternatives, such as graduate school or the Peace Corps...or...just chilling out by moving-in with their helicopter boomer parents.

While student satisfaction is down form 2009, the level of discontent varied widely from school to school.  Schools that performed well in the ranking pulled out all the stops to help students find work--enlisting faculty and alumni, using social media, and developing talent pipelines to local businesses.

Schools are using technology to give students an advantage.  At Virginia's McIntire School, Tim Fitch, assistant dean of career services, has taken to the Web, using Twitter and Facebook to distribute career tips and help find jobs, and internships for students, particularly in industries where few openings exist.  Says Fitch: "We're really trying to be creative in our whole approach."
